First crawler. Second hobby grade. I'm in love!!! Like a 33 year old kid in a candy store! From what I've seen tires/wheels and wheel extenders are the best first upgrades. Thoughts? I'm really excited to build this thing up and not sure where to start as far as bang for the buck goes.

@kinison yeah tires and wheels are usually the first things to be upgraded.

What other plans do you have for your ECX Temper?
Motor/ESC upgrade once I get another receiver for my FS GT3C. I want to try my hand and converting to a 4-link at some point and eventually adding 4ws.

14mm or 19mm spacers, wheels, tires and spinning the top chassis plate that holds the battery and esc, so the battery is in the front are the easy first mods. From there. depending on how you want to go with your temper, i would say motor (recommend the Tazor 280) and shocks would be the next upgrades. Ive had good luck so far with everything else stock on it, but that could change after a few more rock crawls.

@Granther Thanks for the build path! How does the Tazer 280 compare to stock?

Its slightly under double the power. I was very worried at first to over power this truck. I do love going fast but not a this style of crawler. I still get great battery life from the stock 900mah battery and not so much power that i worry about killing the stock parts right off the rip. The only downside with the tazor 280 is the shaft is tooth where as the stock motor is smooth with a flat. I choice to just carefully hand filed it down, mark where i needed a flat and put it by hand. Hope that helps.

I installed Hobbywing's 1080 brushed "crawler" ESC. It was like a new car! Highly recommended. (Of course, you'll need a new radio and receiver as well so it could be kind of expensive.)

@i_r_beej I've been keeping up with your review of the 1080. I knew I wanted a Temper a while ago but need to pay some debt off with tax money first and then treat my self. Luckily I have a FlySky GT3C that bought when I went brushless with my Amp so I just need another one of these. $6.79 with free shipping is hard to beat.

I found a full set of new Gmade 1.9" tires and beadlocks for $46.50. Those should be here Saturday weather providing.

I'd recommend some wheel and chassis weights. I got some from my local hobby shop and ziptied them into my wheels. I've got an ounce in each of the front wheels and half an ounce in the back. Someone above mentioned flipping the chassis plate around for better weight distribution. What I did is switched my steering servo from one axle to the other, which got the same net gain, but felt quicker. Then I just switched the body around and reversed the throttle on my transmitter. I suppose you could also just switch the motor wires.
