quick question as I am still learning

Can you use any brand programmer on an ESC or do you need one that is same brand as esc?

As far as I know, you need to match brands. Many are model specific. Many can only be programmed using the button on the ESC and the LEDs for reference.

I'll corroborate X's note. I have several Hobbywing ESCs and two programming boxes. One ESC requires the use of its dedicated programming box. Not sure what the deal is, but it's best to try buying the programming box (or card) indicated for your model ESC.

As everyone has said, the different brands have different programmers associated with them. Some are cards while other while others are just programming off the blinking lights on the ESC. If you want something that you can program using your computer, go with the Castle brand ESC/motor combo's.

You can get something called Castle Link which you can plug into the Castle ESC, and plug a USB cable into the Castle Link device, then you can program your ESC off your computer using the Castle Link software. Yes, it will only work on Castle ESC's to my knowledge, which is why I'm being so specific.

It gives you a ridiculous amount of control over what you can do with the ESC. Not really necessary, but its cool to program one off your computer lol.

Here's a link to the Castle Creations site for more info if you're curious...
