Different hexes for 0 offset wheels?

I'm going to build a custom Amp and I'd like to use existing wheels I have lying around. They don't have any offset, so they would sit too close to the car / the car would not be wide enough.
Can I use larger hexes to compensate? I saw some 9mm "deep" ones that would be a good start.

I've used Traxxas #3654 10mm wide hexes on my ECX AMP with no additional mods. They worked out quite well.
