Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me out and provide some feedback. First off, I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to all of this.
That said, I picked up the AMP MT buggy as a gift for my son a while back. We ran it totally stock, which was plenty for us, and had a blast for a while until it stopped working properly a few months back. It's been collecting dust since, so I'm wanting to get it fixed up for his birthday in a couple weeks (he's only turning 8).
It will only go maybe half speed at most now and doesn't seem to have much power. We pretty much always used it in the front yard, so it was dealing with thick grass, leaves, sticks, etc. Digging around the net a bit, it sounds like maybe the motor went bad. Does this sound right?
After researching a bit, I saw a lot of recommendations to go to a brushless motor over replacing it with another brushed motor. Would this upgrade help with the motor durability? Speed isn't a concern (it seemed plenty fast already), but I'd rather upgrade once instead of every few months having the motor go kaput again, or is this overkill and likely won't make much of a difference in motor durability for a novice like me and my 8 year old?
If going with a brushless motor, I saw these recommendations on Horizon Hobby: Kinexis 1/10 4-Pole 3000Kv ESC/Motor Combo and Kinexis 1/10 4-Pole 4000Kv ESC/Motor Combo. Which one is better to get for the AMP MT, or is there another one I should consider in this price range or less?
My understanding is that if I upgrade the motor and esc, I also have to get a new receiver. I saw the 2.4GHz Receiver, Waterproof , 4-Channel, V3 (ECX13003) recommended since you can use the stock radio controller with it. Is that correct, and are there any others?
Would I also need to upgrade the gear set to this metal gear set?
I don't want to put too much money into all of it, but I know everyone also suggests upgrading to a LiPo battery, although I have to say the NiMh was great as far as I was concerned. I read that you need a power cut off if you run LiPo. I think that would be included on the brushless and esc upgrade, but can anyone confirm? Also, does anyone have recommendations on a moderately priced LiPo battery? Would there be any issues or problems alternating and running both the NiMh and LiPo batteries, and would I need to do anything differently when switching between the two?
Also, we have just been using the included battery charger for the NiMh, which completely sucks and takes like 9 hours to fully charge. Can anyone recommend a decent charger that's not too expensive?
Really, we were totally content with it in stock condition, but if making some upgrades now will prevent things going faulty in the long run, I'd rather bite that bullet now. I'm not wanting to break the bank because all of this is getting pricey, so any answers, suggestions, or feedback on all of this would be really appreciated!
TLDR: Clueless here, but my fully stock AMP MT 1/10 2WD will only run at about half speed. I'm thinking it's the motor but not sure. Looking for suggestions on brushed vs. brushless for someone on a budget and completely content with stock speed but concerned about better durability, along with any other necessary upgrades (receiver, gears, battery, charger, etc).
