the guy at my usual store changed the rear wheels of my son's car but the wheels are smaller than the front wheels... does that seem normal ???

no, they should be "square" (equal sizes at all 4 corners)

Did he happen to say why he did this? Was he asked to do it?
Were you racing it on the track and he just wanted to help you get better traction?
When you say they are smaller, did you measure them, some tires look smaller than others. Are the rims the same size, pictures?
